Understand and Improve Rhythm
In Cuban Salsa / Casino, we primarily dance in two rhythms: Tiempo, on the 1, or Contratiempo, on the 4 or 8. Contratiempo is the rhythm in which we dance Son Cubano. In this Deep Dive session, we explore both ways of dancing.
The workshop aims to solidify your sense of rhythm and help you find the music’s groove more precisely.
The session has three parts:
Part 1 — Finding the Rhythm How do I reliably find the beat? What tools are available, what do I hear in the music, what do I feel? We’ll look at what the individual instruments do — what the Clave gives me, what the Tumbadora, what the bass — and how I can use that in my dancing.
Part 2 — Contratiempo What does it mean to dance on 4 and 8? How does it feel — and when does it make sense, when not?
Part 3 — Dancing We practice extensively. Which songs invite Tiempo, and which Contratiempo? And then we dance — with real songs, with real focus.

In our Deep Dive Sessions, we consciously take time for what truly matters in dance: genuine understanding instead of quickly consuming figures. Instead of superficially learning many combinations, we dive deep into one topic – we analyze, repeat, refine, and develop a feel for movement, timing, and connection. This builds lasting skill that allows you to dance with more confidence and freedom.
